A wealthy American businessman who came close to buying Rangers has been found guilty of falsifying business records, just hours after the Scottish Premiership club’s CEO James Bisgrove announced his departure.

Donald Trump, whose fans include rapper Kid Rock and Scottish Championship side Airdrieonians, has been found guilty on all 34 counts.

A formerly prolific tweeter, Trump has remained silent on the platform despite boasting over 87m followers, including former Dundee United and Celtic defender Mark Wilson.

The former president, whose golf courses have been endorsed by the likes of former Aberdeen centre-back Scott McKenna, struck a defiant note outside the courtroom.

He told reporters: “This was a disgrace”, only days after the club he once came close to owning saw a goal controversially overturned by VAR in the Scottish Cup Final.

In 2010, Trump revealed it was a “possibility” that he could invest in a Scottish club and added: “Stranger things have happened.”

Two years later, he reportedly considered buying Rangers before being put off by concerns about the state of their finances.

Despite failing to get his Rangers move over the line, Trump went on to carve out a successful career in American politics.

Rangers, meanwhile, have confirmed that Sam Lammers is to leave the club after impressing on loan at Utrecht.
